Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is located at 700 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037. In historic downtown San Diego. With over 4,000 works of art and a collection that spans from the 1950s to the present, the MCASD is a unique museum that focuses on contemporary art. It’s a fun place to visit with the whole family. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, prints, installations, photography, and more. They also have a variety of programs to keep you busy. For example, you can visit the museum during a film night or participate in a public lecture. You can even take a tour with a volunteer docent.
Aside from its permanent collection, the museum holds several special exhibits. One is dedicated to navigation, while another explores the myths of sea monsters. Additionally, MCASD offers lessons in photography, and you can go to its outdoor sculpture garden.
Visitors can also go to the bookstore, which features books on art, photography, and San Diego culture. It also sells clothing and apparel. There’s also a Museum Cafe.
MCASD’s collections include works by major figures in international contemporary art, as well as under-recognized mid-career artists. Their focus is on acquiring new work to enhance the collection and their program. Throughout the years, they have acquired a diverse selection of works from the California and Latin American regions.
MCASD has two locations: Downtown and La Jolla. Whether you visit the Downtown or the La Jolla location, you can expect to experience a lively, upbeat atmosphere. Click here for more info.
MCASD’s new design by Selldorf Architects incorporates a renovation of the existing auditorium. This will provide more gallery space for the collection. Furthermore, it includes a new entryway along Prospect Street. Another feature of the plan is a new art loading dock, which will be incorporated into the parking garage south of the newly proposed galleries. These changes will help make the MCASD more welcoming to visitors.
While the new addition provides the museum with more space, it is also in keeping with the rest of the building’s style. It includes vertical windows that bring natural light into the galleries. As well, the design features cast-in-place concrete and aluminum brise-soleils.
Although the expansion of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is impressive, the real beauty is in the collection itself. Over 4,700 works of art are included in the MCASD’s collection, including paintings, photographs, and sculptures. In addition, the San Diego-Tijuana region is represented with its own distinct art.
The museum’s collections rotate between its two locations. Both museums are open seven days a week. On the third Thursday of every month, admission to the MCASD Downtown is free. However, it will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.
In addition to the new addition, the MCASD has also been renovated. Their goal is to maximize the gallery space and increase the overall museum’s size. Therefore, they have expanded the total area by 55,400 square feet. And in order to accommodate the additional visitors, the Museum has installed 41 parking spaces. Keep reading.
